Sincere thanks to a7r for saving my sanity and bacon there: it *was* a
corruption, probably introduced by the wonderful Microsoft product
which is Hyperterminal.
a7r suggested a reinstall of libc, which contains the DNS libs, and
that has solved the problem.
I'm off down the road now to see how far away I can read slashdot over
IEEE802.11b ;)
