I picked one up too as an inexpensive toy to play with and experiment with
familiar (already have a color iPaq, couldn't quite justify 2 color ipaqs,
particularly now at $599 each - used to be $499 a year ago). There is a
person who updates ram and rom on the iPaq (dont have the link handy), and
you can get up to 128mb ram and 32mb of rom. I think 16mb will only work on
a non X distro. I'm about to try it myself, so I'm not 100% sure. You can
always use the CF pack, but then you loose some pocketability. Having the
ram/rom upgrade (which will happen on mine in the very short term) pretty
much liberate you of the expansion slot, except when you need 802.11, wired
ethernet or a modem (all of those really require the additional battery life
the PCMCIA pack gives anyway).

My 2 cents on the serial cable: buy one. It's less than $30, well worth it.
After all, you only paid $149 for your 3135, $200 less than MSRP.

Ciao,
Francois Dion

Subject: [Familiar] What to do with a H3135?

Hi,

Late yesterday my H3135 arrived, fresh from Amazon, where after
rebate it only cost me $149. (This includes a CF adaptor and an
extra 32MB CF card!) Haven't seen this deal mentioned on the list, so
I thought you'd like to know.

Now that I have it, I've got a couple of newbie questions.

I'm a little confused as to what and when I should try to bring up
Familiar on it. I've seen some discussion about limitations of the
.4 release. Should I wait for .5? Or should I work from the
unstable feed?

Also, the 3135 doesn't come with a serial cable. I saw a question
from an earlier poster asking for pinout information, but no
response. I'd be happy to sacrifice the included USB cable for the
connectors and build my own, if this is possible.

Finally, is the included 16MB enough for the standard distro? I'd
like to use the included CF adaptor for an ethernet (and eventually
802.11 card). I realize I won't be able to put a full suite of apps
on it, I'm mostly interested in getting a small Web browser going...

Any advice would be most welcome.

Thanks,

dean
