If you're installation went well you will have sshd running on the ipaq.
You can ssh to it from your PC and run 'route add default gw...' from
your PC. And do ipkg update too.
Of course, sshd may not be running (see other recent messages) - but you
might be able to fix that from minicom/hyperterminal?
