HELP: Problem after installing kernel 2.4.6

Have installed kernel 2.4.6 and uploaded the 6mb root. Now I do not have
X running and can only communicate/modify using the minicom.

How can I go about running ipkg update as I need the MASQ/ppp connection
and need to run the 'route add default gw...' etc on the IPAQ?
