I had similar problems. They cause appears to be that "x" assumes that
there is an "x-window-manager" around. I linked this to blackbox and it
worked a lot better.

In my case, I only had blackbox and at that stage no gtk menu (I have
now, though).
However, I had a nastier problem during my upgrade which I should
report:
I started out with task-familiar-complete.jffs2 and minor adjustments
(Xipaq for my vga-card) from May 23 and did "ipkg update" and ipkg
upgrade". Everything worked fine up to "Upgrading libgtk1.2 from
1.2.10-1 to 1.2.10-1-fam2". The download was on the large side, but
executing the install ("tar xf -" according to ps) too well over two
hours! Disk space stayed around 92%-94% full. About half an hour later,
during xlibs_4.1-3_arm.ipk, it ran out of disk space (according to
messages). df claimed to have a few blocks left, and as I started to
remove things I got nothing back, nor could I even create a single link!
At that stage I rebooted and presto: down to 87%!
It now works just fine again.
Seems like the jffs is not quite rock solid...
Oh and BTW: the ssh fix posted:
> ssh-keygen -N '' -C '' -t rsa1 -f /etc/ssh/ssh_host_key
doesn't work for me. I skipped the "-t rsa1" bit and everything seems
fine now.
