Could you please capture the output of the console on boot and mail it to me?
The X server complains about 100dpi fonts only because the directory does
not exist, which doesn't matter, anyway. It should not have anything
to do with you not getting a window manager.

This smells like the new window manager pointer (since we let you run
either ion or blackbox) isn't getting created properly; the old /etc/init.d/x
has the window manager name hardwired in the startup script, and the
new one uses an abstract name, which the debian alternatives mechanism is
supposed to be setting properly to whatever window manager you're using.
A couple other questions: Has ion been installed? Has GTK-menu
been installed? Is blackbox present (which you were using before).
