Use the Wiki, Luke :-)

If you want the iPAQ to be able to talk not only to your desktop machine but
also to the outside world, you will also want to read:
<http://www.handhelds.org/z/wiki/IPMasqHowto>
If you're still stuck after working through these, give another shout. The
Wiki is not always accurate (a lot of old information in some sections could
stand to be pruned or revised), but in this particular matter, it worked
like a charm for me.
Once you have this working, you're life will be much, much easier. Among
other things, if you get rsync installed (available via ipkg) on your iPAQ,
backups become insanely easy :-), which is undoubtedly why no-one -- not
even the commercial dists like QPE and PocketLinux -- appears to be working
very hard on a 'hotsync' solution for Linux-on-iPAQ.
