We've had a unit upgraded to try it out under Linux. It sort of worked,
but had problems, which may have been the particular unit. There is a small
amount of Linux work to do (the bootloader and Linux needs to autoconfigure how
much memory automatically; I had to set memory size manually).
Some of what we saw may have been a problem with that particular unit's upgrade,
so we've sent it back and we'll be trying again sometime reasonably
soon. There may have been problems with the particular memory chips
in that unit.
We have two applications for large memory units in mind: compile server systems
(seems strange to call a handheld a server, but it is clearly desirable),
and large vocabulary speech recognition research.
