The WinCE restoration works fine -- I've done it about ten times in the
process of trying various Linux handheld distributions. The directions are
at http://www.handhelds.org/projects/wincerestoration.html. I personally
find the older directions (near the bottom of the page) much easier than the
more recent "reflash utility" directions.
You do have to back up WinCE by making the four 4 MB flash files before you
install Linux. If you have any problems with this and have corrupt WinCE
files, you can download and use mine from
ftp://obenauer.ne.mediaone.net/pub/ipaqrestore/.
Note in the instructions the need to be very careful overwriting the
bootloader -- do that exactly as shown or you'll have an unusable iPaq. But
any other mistakes are recoverable.
