mingle on the desktop

I've been trying to run mingle on my desktop so that I can
extend it and troubleshoot before moving to the ipaq. The
first stepping stone was the gtk library. I believe I've
pulled the right source from the familiar CVS, but it
appears to be built against an earlier version of the gtk
libs than I have on my desktop (Suse 7.1).

1. Can someone tell me what collection of tools I need to
run mingle on an intel desktop (or how to build them)?
2. Where can I find out who's doing mingle development.
There's no mention on the familiar page, and I can't find
Operation Salamander.
