Problems with new X server & APM?

I've just got back from a holiday and upgraded my iPAQ against the unstable
feed.

Last night, after doing so, my iPAQ got into a state where it looked like
it was off and pressing the power button had no visible effect. From the
fact that the battery was flat in the morning, I'd guess that it was
working, but with no feedback, it was impossible to tell which state it was
in.

Two suggestions:
1) Fix the X server. ;)

2) Could a short audible indication, such as a beep (needn't be loud) be
used to indicate that the machine is about to sleep?
