I was just talking to my boss about building a small external battery pack
that would fit in my fanny pack along with the ipaq, keyboard and expansion
slot. When I find a configuration that works I'll let the list know.

Speeking of which, when you have power plugged in to either the backpack, or
the iPaq apm reports the system is attached to ac. So does the backpack
charge from the cradel w/o being plugged in? I havn't tested this but it
would make building a power pack easer.

Isn't the file system used by Familier a JFS? Familier has a kernel module
for reiserfs, one of my friends here in the office has been using that for a
while on his laptop with no problems (then again we don't make a habit of
pulling it's battery while running either) that is a JFS that can be used on
the card.
