I'm not familiar with .debs or debian, particularly.

I just note that most new apps are gnome or kde these days, and that
people generate files that drop into place to define applications,
and that gnome and kde have managed to agree on a "standard".

As I understand it, they've not really written down the convention,
but we can certainly ask on the wm-spec list where both KDE and Gnome
folks hang out.

Another, possibly insane idea is to start using the Gnome panel. It itself
isn't all that huge (300K or so, built in the default fashion): the question
is how many libraries it pulls in we don't already use. This would buy
quite a bit, but may be more trouble than it is worth. We'd almost certainly
want to hack on some of the applets to shrink their footprint.

I've been meaning to poke at the ximian folks now that Gnome 1.4 is out
to see if this is crazy or not.
