Ipaq 3870 hangs when usbnet is connected but not configured

Hello.

As far as I understand, it's a known problem that Ipaq hangs on connection
to usbnet, if usbnet is not yet up at host side (and unhangs when it goes
up).

Does anyone know the tech details of this on ipaq side? I.e. is it waiting
for some event inside kernel, isn't it possible to make this wait
asynchonous, where is the relevant code, etc ?
