After some thought on this matter:
OE is a build system.
Familiar is a distribution.
Familiar has always used a build system that was appropriate at the time.
First it was RH-6.2 based, then debian, now OE, in the future it might
be .....
It makes no sense to me to tie down Familiar to its build system.
