This is just an idéa, but if I run esound and another application tries
to output sound using oss that other application locks up for me (on my
desktop Linux machine). Esound hogs /dev/pcm, and thus blocks all other
applications that output sound.

If "cat somefile >/dev/pcm" generates sound and terminates for a file
larger than the buffer size this is not your problem.
