load ram 0xc3400000; call . just hangs

I'm playing around with the bootloader and I'd like to learn how to do
load ram instead of, well, load bootldr and risking semipermanent damage
and lots of pain and anguish. ;)

So - tried using load ram.

load ram 0xc3400000
then I uploaded ram-bootldr,
then I called it..

.. whereupon my iPAQ froze, LCD off.

I reset it and got back to working, but since I'm playing around with
things I don't fully understand (ack! boot-sa1100.s!), it would be
really nice to have a safety net..
