I stand corrected. This is good new. Seems like FAT12 not a requirement.

Let's try the steps manually and see how far it gets:
        sleeve insert
        pcmcia insert

That should do an ide attach.
        ide identify
should print drive parameters
        ide ptable
should print partition table.
