Splash images might look rather different from the default Compaq
splash. Mine is vertical and has the progress bar in a different
place. I've been able to get it to display nicely. It has my name,
e-mail address and telephone number on it, but it could easily be a
picture or a quote (or a comic!) instead. =)
If people can store splash pages on their root partition, then it
would also be nice to be able to define some things about the splash
page. For example, regions highlighted when you press the
button, bounds of progress bar, or even action to perform when you press
a button.
Why would this be a nice feature again? Oh, right, no need to reflash
the whole bootloader every time you change splash pages. I must have
reflashed 15 times or so.. =) But I don't think I'll be doing this
regularly.
Another reason is easy customizability for people who might not have the
cross-compiling toolkit on their system. That's probably a bigger plus.
Oh, and you can do silly things like changing your splash screen every
day.. ;)
Is this too much flexibility? =) Now that I know where bootldr gets its
data, I can modify bootldr if I decide to change my splash design. What
I'll do for now is clean up my code a bit and submit it as a patch, and
maybe add to README.splash as well.
A nice small step forward might be moving the regions out of lcd.c and
aux_micro.c into, say, a splash_data.h that people can update when they
change their splash screen.
I'm new to this, and more than a little nervous about breaking my iPAQ. I
got into an infinite loop once, but jamey told me how to recover from
it. (Hold the joypad down, reset.) Would greatly appreciate advice.
