    The flash ROM is a surface mount part that's soldered down to the board.

    However, you don't need to replace the chip - it can be reprogrammed in
    circuit using JTAG. This does involve soldering a few wires onto the
    PCB, but it's considerably more straightforward than removing and
    refitting the flash devices.

    If you have a CF card, it may also be possible to use the parrot bootldr
    to reprogram the flash without any soldering. There is some information
    on this in the handhelds.org wiki. It's a slightly dangerous process,
    in that if it goes wrong it can leave you with no valid firmware at all,
    but it doesn't sound like you have a great deal to lose at this point by
    trying.
