How so? Did the red "iPAQ" screen come up, or did the hh.org bootldr come up?
Or did it just go to the CE hourglass? How did it die? Interlaced lines?

You won't get a flashing LED while plugged in at bootldr, as it doesn't charge
from bootldr (who came up with the idea of software charge anyway? *whack!*)

Next time, just wait for it to flash down.
