Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs

Hi,

I am trying to install familiar 0.5.3 on an iPAQ 3670 which had some
previous (unknown) familiar distribution (and bootldr) on it.

I used "load bootldr" to update the bootldr version. However, upon
booting the iPAQ on completion of the "load root" phase I get the
following message:

 " Kernel panic : VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 00:ff"

My question: what causes this error and how do I fix it?
