JTAG question

After playing with JTag-linux, I have started to play around trying to
just read flash (no erase or config, just read the contents) and I
cannot do it.

Any JTAG gurus out there?

This is leading up to trying to set a register on a PLD that controls
the write enable on the flash chip (otherwise JTsg-linux fails reading
flash attributes).
