Found the backlight problem --- hardware -- see web page

After quite a bit of angst, I've now confirmed that the "backlight won't
come on all the time" is a hardware problem. If you've seen this problem
before, you also may be eligible to have it fixed.

This is related to the familiar/ipaq lists only to the point that this
proves that I was *WRONG* in thinking that it was a bootldr problem that
was causing my backlight to work at times, and not work at other times.
