Serial Cable for iPAQ

When installing the bootldr, the directions on the handhelds.org
indicates the use of a serial cable. Can this be done using the USB
cable with a USB to PS/2 converter or a USB to Serial converter or a
USB<->PS/2<->Serial converter? Is there any way to use the USB cable
without hacking into it?
