Restoring PocketPC on H3630

I too am moving a unit back from Linux to PPC. In this case, I don't
have a backup wince.gz.

I successfully updated my bootloader by downloading bootldr-2_18_01.bin,
and getting on the console and typing "load bootldr", and using xmodem
to transfer the bin file.

I have also downloaded the iPaq 3600 ROM, and edited the first 32 bytes
off the file. The md5sum matches what shows on the wiki page
6ccf496fb2e72624d2053732fcd7c26e

When the unit boots the serial consol gives the following messages:

booting jffs2...
booting boot/zImage from partition >root<

kernel_region_words[9]=FFFFFFFB
Unrecognized kernel image

At the end of this it remains at the bootloader screen. Note, I have
seen different values for the last two; kernel magic and kernel region
words.

If I enter "load wince" the unit turns off and nothing happens"

Reset brings my properly to the boot loader screen.

"Task Manager" Boot operating system gives the message above.

I've turned the unit off, waited a few minutes, and turned back on. No
change in the above.

Does anyone have any suggestions? This is probably a very early iPaq.
It is model 3630. My guess is that I'm not using the right Rom, but
there seems to be just one option for 3600 family, and the md5sum
matches.
