Loading new kernel image to jffs2

I am trying to get Linux to run on our strongarm based processor (prototype)
boards (we are using vxWorks otherwise).
I use the bootloader in version compiled from the public cvs repository at tag
NBOOTLDR_2_18_45. It works fine after I added our platform to the machine
list (needed small changes wrt. memory setup and clock frequency etc.).

But now I have to port the Linux kernel. I try to put the whole file system
down in one block (root.jffs2) - including the kernel. This takes ages via
ymodem at 115kbaud. I then hoped I could download the kernel seperately into
the Jffs2 filesysem through the bootloader at each try. Boot to my surprise
"load file" doesn't do that :-(
Is there any way to upload single files to an already existing file system
via the bootloader?
