I suspect it's a terminal emulation problem. For some reason the
settings were left out of the most recent installation docs (although
maybe that has been fixed now).

You need to make sure you have your terminal set to 115200 8-N-1 and no
flow control. No hardware flow control, no software flow control. In
HyperTerm the choice is None.
