A SD-card works just fine, I've used one myself. Just follow the guide
and put the files in the correct directories.
Have you tried moving all files but the img to a subdirectory on the
card? If not, create a subdirectory and call it linux for example, and
put everything BUT the img in there. The img goes on the root. Then do a
hard-reset and see if it works.
