root filesystem

 I have tried partitioning my sd card but i don't have access to a card
reader so i used card export, which it seem does not allow full access to
the partition table or disk every time i try to delete the fat 16 partition
from card using The GUI program gparted in ubuntu or try fdisk they give me
error messages about partition table and when i try to convert the disk from
fat16 to ext2 only the files in the rootfs directory will copy the
directories such as bin will not copy over giving me access errors. I don't
know what else to try i feel like such a n00b.... but can someone who has
successfully booted upload a root file system image (which from what i
understand can be put on a fat 32 formatted SD card )
