As soon as I have time (I hope tomorrow), I'll create an image of the
root filesystem. It works through the loopback interface indeed. It
will be a rather big download, because I have to incorporate free
space in the image too (the image will become the root filesystem, so
it has to have some free space I think). I'll make it about 40 MB, so
it fits on most SD cards (I'll have to experiment with how much free
space is necesarry).

The process is simple: Create an ext2 image (with mke2fs), mount it
with loopback, put the rootfs on it. Then on the device we need the
vfat and loop driver in the initrd, mount the sd card (fat32) and then
the rootfs image (ext2).
