Partitioning sd

How do I mount my sd card in linux on my pc? My usb card readers and my axim runing wm5 aren't detected in linux but if I plug in a usb thumb drive it detects it right away. I am using a kubuntu 6.10 live cd(but I have about 10 other live cds if you want me to try those). Or is there a way to partition my sd in windows?
