Quick update: I got the 2GB PNY SD card to work:

After I running fsck.vfat on the 2GB card I got
this error message:

"Currently, only 2 FATs are supported, not 1."

I also saw that the SD card had one extended partition
which was fat32 i.e: sdb: sdb1 < sdb5 >

So I removed both partitions, created a single normal partition, and formated
it with mkfs.vfat -n smartmedia /dev/sdb1

copied Haret & images into place, and now everything works OK..
