Serial cable question.

Hi,

I've finaly got around to finding the soldering iron and wiring up my
own serial cable, I'm not using a MAX 232 but a MAX233 to convert the
voltage levels. The problem I'm having is that I'm not picking up any
serial data so It's a problem with a)Kernel not booting and/or b)my
serial cable. I'm using Fisherss haret and zImagex30s et al so I would
beet the kernel is booting so that leave me to think it's the serial
cable. My question is does anyone know of a way to test a serial cable
from PocketPC 2003, I have tried to use ActiveSync but it's not working.
  The cable is just wired RX/TX/GND so the missing CTR/DSR lines might
be why ActiveSync is not working.
