i use loop back test, RX to TX loop back. and after that send chars at
one side, receive them at another side, if that's OK, all are OK.
you can ask Richard for better ideas, he is an electronic expert .

at the PC side , i use minicom (in linux), the PPC side , that's
comGenius, the comGenius's interface is Chinese, so you should look for
another one.
there is no notice when connecting is normal. all you can do with the
serial calbe are sending and receiving .
