usbnet but no usb0 device

Hi, yesterday I decided to try the linux stuff. So I copied all necessary
files to a spare sd-card and run haret.
Linux comes up, these are the last lines:
------------------------
...
udc: USB reset
USB cmd disconnect
If this is not automatic, please run the following commands on the PC host:
> insmod usbnet (should be automatically done by USB hotplug)
> ifconfig usb0 192.168.0.200
> route add 192.168.0.202 dev usb0
Waiting for the PC host (192.168.0.200) to be available through the USB
ethernet connection...
------------------------

The host PC runs Gentoo (2.6.14-gentoo-r4). I compiled allmost all usb
related drivers as modules and tried to manually load them.
When I "> ifconfig -a" there is no usb0 device. The gadget drivers wont load
saying theres no such device.

When I do "> lsusb" theres only my usb-mouse and my webcam present.
When I hardreset the Axim and put it in the cradle with Windows Mobile
running and then do a "> lsusb" it shows a Dell device, as soon as I start
haret and boot up linux the device is gone.

I also tried to access the axim via IR with my notebook but that did not
work either (should it?)

So far for my problem

----
When running Linux on the Axim it happens that after some time the screen
begins to get blind, I dont know how to describe. It starts at the bottom
and slowly covers the whole screen, like when its very cold outside and the
water condenses at the windows. After quite some time the screen is
completely white. Pretty scary if you ask me. A push on the Power button
resets the display. Do you know where this behaviour is coming from?
I read that the wireless chip is an Agere HermesII. This is very bad news as
there is currently no driver available for 2.6 kernels. I have that problem
with my Orinoco wireless card too >[
