The goal above sounds perfect! I'm excited to see such a system.
I don't know much about the "method scripts" or other details of your
system, so I won't comment on implementation, but I'll trust you to do
wonderful things.
One other group that you might want to pull into the discussion is
emdebian. This sounds like something that group might be very
interested in:

So far, emdebian has been working primarily on "emdebsys", (formerly
CML2+OS), which allows a user to configure a Linux kernel and root
filesystem simultaneously.
