Welcome to the autobuild mailing list. Here's the state of things as I
see it.

Although the package upload system that I implemented is a great step
forward in terms of decentralizing package management, it is inadequate
in terms of real release management because we do not have the sources
from which the packages were built. We really need something that
automatically builds the packages required for each distribution from
the source repository.

We seem to be standardizing on the Debian package format, but I think
the system should be extensible to RPM or other formats.

Ideally, I think the system should support cross-compilation as well as
native compilation.
